about
A song about the brittle nature of art and of those creating it and the fragility of meaning; the stories we tell ourselves about who we are.
The original idea for the song came whilst sitting round a campfire outside squatted garages in 2015, jamming with other musicians. It was in the days before Trump and Brexit. The scene seemed strangely apocalyptic, yet the simplicity of connecting with music was transforming it into something sublime.
lyrics
Rootless lyrics:
You live in a world of bourgeois twee
You think beauty is the truth and your conscience is free
Like a fantastical bird you keep the world in a cage
Well I'm just ephemeral, a drop from the sky
To nourish or to rust, I'm all you decry
While you build your castles wrought as finely as you try
I will bring them down, I will bring them down
Even if you call me by name
Even I....
(Cos I'm)
Rootless, stemless, culture free
Shaking ancient ghosts from our family tree
Ah.............Ai......
Ah.............Ai............
Well Fortune turns her wheel and it is hers to turn
We think as we feel, we have a crust to earn
Raise a smile and move some feet before we return
You cannot steal our shadow, (you) cannot steal our shadow
You cannot steal our shadow, (you) cannot steal our shadow
At all.......
(Cos we're)
Rootless, stemless, culture free
Shaking ancient ghosts from our family tree
Ah.............Ai......
Ah.............Ai............
